In 2002, I received over 10 percent of the vote running for Congress in South Carolina’s Second Congressional District. I received those votes, running as a third party candidate, because 10 South Carolinians demonstrated at the corner of Trade and Tryon streets in Charlotte, protesting predatory loans. We videoed the demonstration and played it on five cable stations in the S.C. district. The predatory loans, as we know, led to a real estate bubble, then to foreclosures, and ultimately to the global recession. But the Republicans and Democrats continued to cash contribution checks from the banks.
Now, once again, Republicans and Democrats have bowed to the banks, permitting the same kind of risky behavior that led to the great recession. South Carolina political science Professor William Kreml chaired my 2002 campaign and spoke out for years about gridlock and the influence of the interest groups. He predicted the gutting of Dodd-Frank’s protections against the banks in recent writings. Stop voting for Republicans and Democrats. They are not on your side.
