I am delighted that the powers that be have decided to reward the men and women who protect and serve as Columbia police officers. This is long overdue.
Now, let’s take care of the firefighters. Both professions are made up of men and women who put their lives on the line every day when they do their jobs.
Not a single member of City Council would be willing to do their jobs, and yet they can’t find enough money to pay these people what they are worth?
Some of our firemen are qualifying for food stamps, and leaving Columbia to go to Cayce and West Columbia or Lexington to make more than they are being paid here.
If we can afford to pay for a baseball stadium, then certainly we can pay our firefighters better, and we need to start now.
