So, the Supreme Court has ruled against construction of a massive seawall at the back of Kiawah Island spit.
I once read that one reason South Carolina has been relatively unspoiled (at least until recently) is that it was too poor to destroy much of its precious ecosystem from the mountains to the sea. Well, with rise in incomes and access to low-cost capital, our coastal counties have really been under attack for the past few decades. I hope this court decision will slow down this degrading process.
Take a close look at the photo of Captain Sam’s Spit at Kiawah Island on page B-1 of the Dec. 11 State. All those boardwalks through the delicate salt marsh and countless others near the coast underscore my point.
