The news of the Sony hacking and of police shootings has made me realize how we can misuse our rights. We loudly claim our rights to free speech and to bear arms, but we fail to see the need and duty to use those rights responsibly.
Why would anyone consider making a movie about the assassination of an actual leader of another country and call it comedy? Why would we consider putting guns in the hands of anyone who wants one?
When we thoughtlessly use the power of speech or when we interpret “an organized militia” as anyone walking and breathing, we find ourselves imprisoned rather than freed by our rights. We find ourselves defending despicable acts of insensitivity, cruelty and violence.
We are confronted with loud voices proclaiming our rights. We need to heed the voices around us and within us that call us to reason and responsibility in exercising those rights.
