It is so shocking that Gov. Nikki Haley recently wrote to ask the the U.S. Department of Commerce to reconsider tariffs on Chinese tire imports that are threatening our domestic jobs. The United States has lost millions of jobs from trade deals that benefit corporations over people.
Weak as they are, our trade laws are the last line of defense for many U.S. industries and workers when countries violate trade laws. Now Gov. Haley is undercutting the little protection we have?
Recently, a group of U.S. representatives — Democrats and Republicans — also wrote a letter to the Department of Commerce. In contrast to the governor, they noted the reasons this case is so critical: “China has targeted the passenger vehicle and light truck tire sector for years. They reportedly have hundreds of tire manufacturing facilities producing far more than they can absorb domestically. Their exports to the United States have surged in recent years and are seriously disrupting the domestic market.”
I hope Gov. Haley will reconsider her position and join those bipartisan lawmakers in Washington. They are speaking up to defend jobs. We need a governor who will do the same.
