Social media has been blowing up with comments on the Irmo doctor who abandoned his newly adopted dog in Florida. While I understand the anger and indignation people feel toward anyone who mistreats an animal, I wonder how much better our community would be if we would channel that emotion into action to improve the lives of abandoned animals.
I am sure with all this attention, many great people will want to adopt that dog. There are plenty of great dogs and cats in shelters throughout the state, and all too many healthy animals are euthanized merely because no one will take them in.
If you do not support animal abuse, and you do not advocate the destruction of healthy animals, then adopt a shelter pet, make a donation to a good rescue organization, pay the spay/neuter bill for an animal whose owners are unable to afford that service, or volunteer at a shelter. If you cannot adopt, perhaps you can foster an animal.
No one person can remedy the plight of abandoned animals, but that is not an excuse to do nothing. Every donation, every pet adopted, every volunteer hour does count.
