Why are so many people jumping on the band wagon to increase cell phone taxes to subsidize the telecommunication industry (by helping maintain the land-line infrastructure in rural areas)? This is another bad idea with good intentions.
I urge everyone to do their own research on S.277. There are so many special interest groups involved that the obvious issue is clouded. I believe before any law is changed, we should ensure that it has proper oversight and accountability.
As it is, telecommunication companies can withdraw mony from an existing fund, but are not required to provide accountability of how the subsidies are spent. Please call your senators and urge them to vote no on S.277 or at the very least fix the law before expanding it to cover 4.5 million South Carolina cell phone owners.
