As a two-tour veteran of Vietnam, I can tell you that, contrary to Terry Jarvis’ claim, we were not defeated in the Vietnam War (“War in Afghanistan can’t be won,” Sept. 1).
President Richard Nixon was out of touch with what was happening there. North Vietnam was fixing to surrender due to the massive bombing campaign in Hanoi. The president decided to have peace talks without consulting military officials, which led to rearming in the North and many more Americans dying.
We weren’t defeated; we quit due to politics. Communism was allowed to spread.
When we as a nation choose to ignore threats, they end up on our doorstep. We’ve let ISIS go unchecked, and where has that gotten us?
If the war was being fought here, maybe Mr. Jarvis and others like him would be willing to fight for their country. Or maybe that’s an asinine idea.
