Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin has proposed that graduates of public schools in Columbia receive a free college education. Affordable post-secondary education is important for the development of many young people’s potential and their contributions to their communities. I hope Mayor Benjamin and other political, educational, business and civic leaders will further explore how our community can effectively assist families in helping their young children develop their potential from birth (even before birth) onward.
As is well known, a healthy, stimulating environment for young children before they attend school is crucial for their development. The challenge of early childhood development will be much greater than the important challenge of providing affordable, even free, post-secondary education, but the benefits to all will be much greater too.
The State publishes a cross section of the letters we receive from South Carolinians in order to provide a forum for our community and also to allow our community to get a good look at itself, for good or bad. The letters represent the views of the letter writers, not necessarily of The State.
