Q: Do you think A.C. Flora Girls Basketball will do good next season? And Who do you think is the key palyers on their team?

Answered 03/20/07 16:58:48 by

A: Hmm, I see no reason that they shouldn't. They will have Tiara Knotts, Kim Roach and Tierra Scott back and those are the biggest impact players for the Falcons. Getting off to a better start would be key for the Falcons next season. They did plenty of things right during the playoffs and if they keep the same attitude they had at the end of this season right from the start, I think they will be just fine.

Q: do you have any information on the Charleston High School football team of 1922, that was supposed to have won the national championship in Peabody, MA

Answered 03/15/07 14:18:51 by

A: No, I never heard such a thing, but I'll look into it.

Q: Did u play any sports when u were in highschool? Y r u so interested in this?

Answered 03/09/07 16:56:43 by

A: Because of all the things I could do to earn a living watching sports, talking to interesting people and writing about it is the most desirable way for me to spend 40+ hours a week, especially since I get to watch the Tar Heels play in the ACC tournament without even having to sneak away from my desk. And no I didn't play any sports in high school. I only liked football, and I was on the track team for a season but that stint was hardly worth mentioning.

Q: When will the 2A Boys Tennis Rankings be posted? I am from the Gilbert varsity boys tennis team

Answered 03/09/07 16:46:43 by

A: When the tennis coaches' association selects them. They did not do a 2A poll this week, but whenever they do, it will show up on Jim McLaurin's Thursday prep page.

Q: What do u think about Hammond in the long run? Hammond is doing very well this year!

Answered 03/09/07 15:52:36 by

A: That's about it...they are doing very well this year. I think at least girls cross country and tennis teams could repeat next year barring major injuries and things like that. Maybe the wrestling team, too. Hammond seems to attract pretty strong athletes and that trend may well continue, in which case, they'll continue to succeed in the long run.

Q: Do you think that South Carolina State University will make the playoffs this season? And do you think that shelton Brown and The Bethune-Bowman Basketball team live up to the expectations this past season?

Answered 03/07/07 18:53:32 by

A: Hmmm, I haven't paid that much attention what with covering high school basketball playoffs, so I won't even hazard a guess. Check with Seth Emerson or Kent Babb.

Q: JV girls undefeated @ Heathwood Hall! Dat should of been in the newspaper right???? Can yall still put it in there????

Answered 03/07/07 18:51:11 by

A: Nope. We don't cover junior varsity sports. Sorry!

Q: The SC YMCA Championships were held last weekend in Rock Hill. Several kids from the local Y won in their age groups. Columbia Mudcats placed second overall. It isn't national, but it has strong local connections. Any chance of an article?

Answered 02/26/07 16:24:17 by

A: That kind of article shows up in the Neighbors section when community coaches notify us of those things. Since our primary focus is high school sports, you we rely on coaches to keep us up to date on everything else. Thanks for the note.

Q: DO YOU KNOW IF LEXINGTON HS HAS A FOOTBALL COACH YET. IF SO WHO IS IT.

Answered 02/22/07 16:10:28 by

A: They do not.

Q: could you please write an article listing all high school basketball players (boys and girls)that will be playing college basketball?

Answered 02/15/07 19:44:29 by

A: That would not be an article it would be a list, and the closest we get to that is the list we print during the April signing period and then again in the November signing period.

Q: How come there is so many reporters to cover friday night football and so little to cover friday night basketball in South Carolina. The state only covers 2 basketball games but numerous football games on friday nights.

Answered 01/29/07 14:46:21 by

A: Because this is South Carolina, for one. Football gets a lot more attention from readers and therefore more space in the paper. So even if our staffing levels hadn't changed since football season, we would still only have room for two basketball stories on most nights, though you will see more coverage as we get into the playoffs. Also, basketball is covered two nights a week which makes four games covered each week which is almost as many as fotball games (5-6) we covered each week. But seriously, it's South Carolina. Kevin GArnett and Ray Allen notwithstanding, this is football country.

Q: Is it at all possible to post the scores of the midlands games online? I'm in the upstate and I get on The State.com to see coverage of my old high school but I can never see the scores.

Answered 01/24/07 18:11:07 by

A: The high school scoreboard is occassionally available online, and I will check on making it more consistently available. Thanks for the suggestion!

Q: Why isn't all highschool games covered? On last week Akien high defeated Lower Richland, who was undefeated prior to the game. It was no write up in the paper. Last night, Friday,1-12-07 Akien defeated Lexington High boys. Their is not write up in the paper. Why is that? Akien High has an excellent team with great players who are going on to College ball. They should receive better coverage when they come to town and defeat our home teams.

Answered 01/19/07 19:59:32 by

A: 1. We have two high school reporters available to cover basketball games on any given night. 2. We have limited space for high school coverage, which competes for space with Clemson, USC and professional sports.

Q: Is the Irmo girls basketball team ranked in the state? If so, what is there ranking?

Answered 01/10/07 21:46:58 by

A: THEIR ranking is fifth this week. Our rankings will be printed on the Prep Page in the Sports section every Tuesday until the end of the regular season.

Q: I know most people think that IRMO/LR are the best teams around, but now that Ridge View has their team in place (football season over), what is your thought on this team of seniors that have been together for a couple of years Quick (G/F 20), King (C 44) Heath (PG 23), Fulmore (G 21), Cole (F 33), Bra Spencer (G 24) and Bri Spencer (G 3)?

Answered 01/10/07 21:35:43 by

A: I saw the RV-Irmo game and the chemistry those guys have together was insturmental in getting the overtime win. The seniors give the team height and depth and energy, all of which they will need to be considered a peer of LR and Irmo. I do think that is attainable. The Blazers took too long to get tuned up early in the season, but they seem to be in stride now and that bodes well for them, not so much for their opponents.

Q: what do u think of fort mill girls basketball team

Answered 12/20/06 17:03:35 by

A: I hadn't thought about the Yellow Jackets at all yet, actually. I've still been in football mode until just this week. I'll be sure to form an opinion and get back to you over the holiday.

Q: When will the all region high school football teams will be selected for the 2006 season?

Answered 12/20/06 17:02:02 by

A: Just to be clear: All-Region teams have been selected as far as I know, but we at The State have nothing to do with that, other than printing those lists if they are reported to us. Region representatives from the schools coordinate the All-Region voting, where coaches from one region, for example Region 4-4A, vote for the best players from that region. The State's All-Area team (which has already been chosen and will appear in a January Neighbors section)is also voted on by coaches. But we only separate them by class, so our Class 3A team is made up of players from all 3A schools in the midlands (Blythewood, Dreher, AC Flora, Swansea, Eau Claire, B-C, Airport...)regardless of region.

Q: With the dismissal of the football coach at Lexington can you tell me if any other Furman University alums are in trouble at Airport or White Knoll? Miserable football over here in Lexington County!

Answered 12/20/06 16:52:48 by

A: There have been rumors about possible changes at White Knoll, but nothing concrete yet. I think that the folks at Airport recognize that the team had some bad breaks this year, but remain confident in their coach's abilities. I doubt that there will be any movement there.

Q: Akilah, What's the buzz on the freshman kid at Irmo, Mustafa Greene? He appears to be an awfully talented young player.

Answered 12/05/06 21:15:50 by

A: Well, he's fast and very athletic and obviously eager to perform. Coach Hanna thinks he'll benefit from more time in the weight room before next season and blossom into another smart and hard to tackle ball carrier. The soft hands are a bonus.

Q: When will prep Wrestling be covered? The season has begun.

Answered 12/05/06 21:14:31 by

A: Prep wrestling will be covered when football is over. Not too much longer now...
