Fans work to keep J.V. Martin Junior High school 7th graders cool as they play volley ball in the school's gymnasium, built in 1936 and originally used as a boxing arena. The gymnasium does not have air conditioning. Three fans are used to keep the gym cool, but, according to physical education teacher Shirl Carter, "the temperature can get as high as 105... . When it's real hot your not going to cool it off no matter how many fans you have."
