Gamecocks split doubleheader on final day of Carolina Classic
— A three-run homer in the first inning by junior third baseman Jordan Bizzell led USC (15-5) to an 8-0, five-inning win over Tennessee State (3-8) to close the Carolina Classic on Sunday afternoon at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field. Senior Julie Sarratt (7-3) tossed a two-hit shutout, not walking a single Tiger batter.
Earlier, South Carolina allowed three unearned runs in the first, as No. 24 South Alabama (15-3) went on to a 4-1 win. Gamecock sophomore Nickie Blue (8-2) allowed eight hits and three runs, none earned, in five innings. She walked one and struck out six.
Alabama women outlast USC
— The No. 42 South Carolina women’s team (8-3, 1-1 SEC) battled No. 9 Alabama (9-2, 1-1) for nearly six hours but fell 4-2 at the USC Field House.

USC men finish 10th at SEC Indoors
— At Lexington, Ky., the Gamecocks closed out the SEC Indoor Championships on Saturday highlighted by Jermaine Collier’s third-place finish in the men’s 60-meter hurdles. The USC men finished 10th with 31 points, and the women placed 14th with nine.
Nadal earns first title in nearly nine months
— At Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rafael Nadal won his first title in nearly nine months after defeating Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-1 at the Argentina Open. The top-seeded Spaniard hadn’t reached a final since winning at Roland Garros last year. It was Nadal’s 46th title on clay, moving him within three of the record set by Argentine Guillermo Vilas in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Chelsea wins League Cup
— Coach Jose Mourinho added more silverware to his collection as Chelsea beat Tottenham to win the Capital One Cup. It ended his longest trophy drought in management, having last won the 2012 Spanish title with Real Madrid before rejoining Chelsea in 2013.
The London side’s day was made better when rival Manchester City lost away to Liverpool to remain five points behind Chelsea – having played one game more.
