— The Mariners are on the verge of landing right-handed slugger Nelson Cruz on a free-agent deal worth $57 million over four years. Cruz led the major leagues with 40 home runs last season and had 108 RBIs for Baltimore.
Galaxy advances to MLS Cup
— Late Sunday in Seattle, Clint Dempsey (Furman) had a goal and assist to lead Seattle to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the second leg of the MLS Western Conference final, but the Galaxy advanced to the MLS Cup on road goals after a 2-2 aggregate. The first leg was 1-0 Galaxy and road goals are a tiebreaker. The Galaxy will play New England at 3 p.m. Sunday in the MLS Cup. ... Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal on Nov. 22 was the most-watched Premier League game in U.S. history at 1.41 million viewers. ... Thierry Henry, 37, is leaving the N.Y. Red Bulls after more than four seasons with the MLS. The French forward said he doesn’t know what he’s going to do next.

Silver Charm retires
— Former Kentucky Derby winner Silver Charm has returned to Georgetown, Ky., to live out his days as a celebrity at the Old Friends horse retirement farm. The 1997 Derby and Preakness winner has spent about a decade in Japan, where he continued his stud career.
