Many have aspirations to be the best in their chosen field. Claudio Castagnoli, better known by his World Wrestling Entertainment ring name Cesaro, understands what it takes to reach for those goals.
Cesaro joined the WWE after more than a decade as an independent in Europe and the U.S. He made his WWE debut in April, 2012, and has been a major player since.
Cesaro will be in action Friday night at the WWE show at the Colonial Life Arena.
Cesaro is considered one of the best technical and strongest wrestlers on the circuit.
Never miss a local story.
“There are a lot of guys with that aspiration,” Cesaro said, “but very few that actually make it. A lot of people say they will do anything, but don’t carry through with the necessary things to achieve that.
“I haven’t seen my family for more than a couple of hours at a time in 10 years. That’s just an example of the type of sacrifice you have to be willing to make if you want to be the best and that’s what I am. You just have to keep your mouth shut, work hard, and if you ever get to this level, then you can start talking.”
Cesaro grew up in Lucerne, Switzerland, where most of his family resides. He moved to the U.S. to become the best. He said the fact that some aren’t willing to make that type of leap bothers him.
“That’s why I have a chip on my shoulder,” Cesaro said. “That’s why I talk the way I do and say the stuff that I say. I feel like I've earned the right to do so.”
The “Swiss Superman” is part of a youth movement that has seen stars such as Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Bray Wyatt emerge in the past year. That should leave the WWE in good hands when the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton and The Undertaker decide to retire.
“The future is very bright,” Cesaro said. “I think the current crop of young guys can help bring the WWE to a new era. I think it’s a very exciting time for the WWE fans.”
Cesaro, Cena, Rollins and Dolph Ziggler are scheduled to headline Friday’s show. Cesaro said going to a live event is much different than anything you might witness on television.
“WWE Live is the most exciting show in entertainment,” Cesaro said. “The fans can expect to see all of their favorite WWE superstars, of course, and, if they’ve seen Monday Night Raw or Friday Night Smackdown, that is just a little taste. The live events are way more action.”
