CIU’s Smith named to two All-America teams
— Columbia International University standout Tyler Smith has been honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the National Christian College Athletic Association as a second-team All-American. The award is the first by a CIU student-athlete. Smith is a junior center back who played high school soccer for Dutch Fork.
‘Super bacteria’ found in Rio water
— A drug-resistant “super bacteria” that’s normally found in hospitals and is notoriously difficult to treat has been discovered in the waters where Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic sailing events will be held, scientists said.
The Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Brazil’s most respected health research institute, said it has discovered bacteria that produce an enzyme that make it resistant to most forms of treatment in water samples taken from various spots along the Carioca River.

— Dallas Eakins was fired as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, who have lost 15 of 16 games and are well on the way to missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season. ... At Pittsburgh, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 28 shots, Bryan Rust and Brian Dumoulin scored their first NHL goals and the Penguins beat Tampa Bay 4-2. ... At Uniondale, N.Y., Josh Bailey scored the winning goal in the shootout, and the New York Islanders rallied to beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2. ... At Buffalo, N.Y., Matt Moulson scored the only goal of the shootout to lift Buffalo to a 5-4 victory against Ottawa.
