Orioles keep Hunter
— Orioles reliever Tommy Hunter agreed to a $4.65 million, one-year contract with the club. Hunter began last season as Baltimore’s closer, but the right-hander faltered and was replaced by Zach Britton. Hunter went 3-2 with 11 saves in 17 tries in 2014. He had a 2.97 ERA over 602/3 innings, striking out 45 and walking 12. ... The White Sox agreed to a $4.4 million, one-year contract with outfielder Dayan Viciedo, avoiding arbitration. Viciedo hit .231 with 21 homers and 56 RBIs in 145 games last year.

Ex-Clemson star joins MLS
— Ex-Tiger defender Phanuel Kavita signed with Real Salt Lake of the MLS. Kavita, who graduated in December, was a high school star in the Salt Lake City area. Kavita served as a Clemson captain during his junior and senior years. ... USC freshman forward Savannah McCaskill was selected for the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team training camp. McCaskill, last year’s SEC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-SEC honoree, is one of 28 to participate at the camp Jan. 24-31 at Sanford, Fla. ... At Zurich, a day after denying rumors he was considering leaving Barcelona, Lionel Messi cast new doubts about his future at the club. Messi said at the awards ceremony for the FIFA BAllon d’Or that he doesn’t know whether he’ll be back at Barcelona next season. He has been linked to Chelsea. At the ceremony, Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid/Portugal) was named player of th year.
Minnesoat man sets record
— A Minnesota adventurer has succeeded in becoming the first solo climber to reach the summit of Alaska’s Mount McKinley in the month of January, his support team said, citing a GPS tracking device. Lonnie Dupre, of Grand Marais, reached the 20,320-foot summit of North America’s tallest peak at 2:08 p.m. Alaska time Sunday, said project coordinator Stevie Plummer.
