FINALLY, AN AMERICAN won the New York City Marathon for the first time since 1982, and five others were among the top 10 finishers.
Does this indicate a revived interest in long-distance competition among Americans?
Olympian Meb Keflezighi's winning time was 2:09:15. Ethiopian Derartu Tulu was the women's winner in 2:28:52. Sopagna Eap, 28, an American who lived last year on John's Island while completing her internship in clinical psychology was 14th female finisher in 2:45:15.
The long haul. Anne Lundblad, a 43-year-old counselor at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina, set a course record at the 24 Hours of Boulder Ultra Trail Run on Oct. 21 by covering 121 miles, which was 21 miles ahead of the second finisher who was first male overall.
A well-known ultra trail runner, it was her first try at a 24-hour trail run and a surprise that she qualified for the U.S. national ultra team. Since the race only counts "whole" loops on the 7.6-mile course, Lundblad stopped at 23 hours because she would not have been able to complete another loop within an hour.

Greenville's SPINX Half-Marathon had 676 Halloween runners led by Greer's John Stoehr, 24, in 1:12:02. Hometown runner Margaret Schmitt, 37, was first female and ninth overall in 1:22:25.
The 37th Governor's Cup on Nov. 7 drew 676 for the half-marathon and 489 for the 8K. Columbian Sarah Powell, 22, was seventh overall in the Half-Marathon in 1:24:14.
