Bulldogs beat Gamecocks 41-30 in SEC opener

South Carolina and Georgia continued their tradition of lighting up the Sanford Stadium scoreboard on Saturday afternoon.

South Carolina and Georgia continued their tradition of lighting up the Sanford Stadium scoreboard on Saturday afternoon.

This time, the No. 11 Bulldogs were standing when the shootout was complete as the No. 6 Gamecocks saw their three-game winning streak in this series snapped by a 41-30 Georgia victory.

An alternating ecstatic and nervous sellout crowd watched Georgia (1-1, 1-0 SEC) take the early SEC East lead. The Gamecocks fell to 1-1 and 0-1 in the SEC.

The Gamecocks -- who were playing without starting center Cody Waldrop (foot), starting safety Kadetrix Marcus (shoulder), starting cornerback Vic Hampton for the first half (suspension) and with a limping Kelcy Quarles and Jadeveon Clowney – were tied 24-24 at the half.

The team’s last three games in Athens have featured at least 71 combined points.
