Tyler Slaton’s two-run homer in the fourth inning resulted in the winning runs on Wednesday as No. 13 Clemson beat Georgia Southern, 5-4, in the second game of a two-day, midweek series.

The win was the 900th for Clemson coach Jack Leggett.

Leggett, 60, took the helm at Clemson in 1994. He has led the team to four College World Series appearances.

The back-and-forth game saw the Eagles (17-5) take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then Clemson (13-7) scored two unearned runs on a two-out error in the second inning.

The Eagles regained the lead with two runs in the third inning before Slaton’s second homer of the season put the Tigers ahead for good.

Freshman right-handed reliever Drew Moyer (1-0) earned his first career victory with four scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Matt Campbell pitched a scoreless ninth to record his fourth save.

Eagles reliever Eric Alonzo (2-2) suffered the loss.

Clemson returns home to face top-ranked Florida State in a three-game series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
