A wild recruiting day for DL Sterling Johnson (6-5 290) of Clayton, NC ended Tuesday night when he announced on Twitter a commitment to the Clemson Tigers.
“I would to thank all the schools who have offered but, It’s official, I am verbally committed to Clemson university!” is what Johnson wrote shortly after 8:00 PM.
Earlier in the day, according to a source close to the situation, Johnson called Tennessee with the intention to commit but the Vols wouldn’t take his pledge then. Johnson was told by Tennessee that two of their defensive ends had put on enough weight to move to tackle and they only had one spot remaining and wanted to see him in camp before taking his commitment.
Johnson dropped the Vols from consideration. Clemson was in contact with coaches at his school Tuesday. It was thought Johnson would not rush into another decision and would further consider Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State but he made the decision to commit to the Tigers.
When asked to comment about his commitment Tuesday night, Johnson said he would wait until talking with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney before talking about his pledge.
Last season Johnson had 80 tackles with 56 tackles for loss and 8 sacks. He is Clemson’s 12th commitment for the 2015 class and the second on the defensive line.
