CLEMSON – Clemson receiver Joe Craig will be suspended for the season’s first three games, coach Dabo Swinney announced after practice Thursday. The speedy Craig will be eligible to return for the Florida State game on Sept. 24.
Craig will be able to practice with the team during the three-game suspension. Craig rejoined the team Thursday. The redshirt freshman had been suspended since the spring when he was involved in a fight with a female track athlete.
‘A rare dude’
Swinney said he’s never seen a freshman like receiver Sammy Watkins even dating back to his days at Alabama.
“The work ethic, the toughness, the attention to detail, the way he studies the game, he’s just the whole package,” Swinney said. “He makes very few mistakes, it’s just uncanny. He has great football instincts. You pick up his notebook and he has 10 pages of notes off of one meetingHe’s definitely going to be a big factor. He’s a rare dude.”
Not only will Watkins open as a first-team wide receiver, Swinney said fans will also see Watkins “pretty early” in the season at punt returner. WRs DeAndre Hopkins and Jaron Brown are also working at punt returner. Watkins, Brown and RBs Mike Bellamy and Andre Ellington are working as kick returners.
The next Tyler Grisham?
Swinney said the plan was to redshirt freshman receiver Adam Humphries but Humphries has played so well in camp he will play as a true freshman.Humphries has drawn comparisons to former Clemson receiver Tyler Grisham.
Clemson has begun preparing for Troy, the team’s opening opponent. Troy is known as a BCS-buster, upsetting Oklahoma State in 2007 and nearly defeating Oklahoma State against last season, losing, 41-38. “I’ve watched them my whole life,” Swinney said. “We’ll have a tough matchup with some of their unknowns.”. Long snapper Phillip Fajgenbaum has been placed on scholarship.
