Ninth-ranked Florida State Seminoles scored two runs in the first inning and held on for a 2-1 victory against No. 17 Clemson at Dick Howser Stadium on Friday night.
The Seminoles, who evened the series 1-1, improved to 43-11 overall and 19-10 in the ACC. The Tigers, who saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end, fell to 39-16 and 18-11.
Florida State scored two runs in the first inning and had runners at the corners with no outs before the Tigers worked out of the jam. Clemson put its leadoff batter on base five consecutive times from innings 3-7, but managed one run.
Seminole starter Luke Weaver (6-2) earned the win by pitching a career-high 7 1/3innings. He allowed seven hits, one run, and two walks with eight strikeouts. Billy Strode retired the only batter he faced in the eighth inning, then Robbie Coles pitched a hitless and scoreless ninth inning to record his ninth save.
Matthew Crownover (7-2) suffered the loss, as he yielded five hits, two runs, and no walks with three strikeouts in 41/3 innings pitched. Clate Schmidt, who was making his first appearance since suffering an injury on May 6, pitched 32/3 innings in relief, allowing no hits, no runs, and no walks with one strikeout.
Clemson and Florida State will play Saturday at 3 p.m. on ESPNU. With a win, Florida State can clinch the ACC Atlantic Division title. A Clemson win and an N.C. State loss at Duke on Saturday would give Clemson the division championship, while a Clemson win and a Wolfpack win would give N.C. State the division title.
