There’s a new name atop the leaderboard in The State’s weekly Heisman Trophy poll, but this one also plays for a school in the Palmetto State.
Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd replaced USC defensive end Jadeveon Clowney in the top spot among the 13 Heisman voters polled each week. Boyd, who ranked sixth last week, had seven first-place votes after he led the Tigers to a win over No. 5 Georgia while rolling up 312 total yards and five touchdowns, three in the air and two on the ground.
Clowney, whose first-place votes dropped from four to one, had three tackles with no sacks in USC’s win against North Carolina.
Georgia tailback Todd Gurley, who faces the Gamecocks this week, made the biggest jump, going from No. 13 to No. 4 after gaining 154 yards and scoring twice against Clemson.
Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater moved to No. 2 after throwing five touchdown passes in the opener, while Alabama wide receiver Christion Jones came out of nowhere to No. 7 after scoring three touchdowns, one each on a reception, kickoff return and punt return.
