Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, jumped to the top of The State’s weekly Heisman poll after passing for 464 yards and five touchdowns and rushing for 98 yards in a 49-42 loss to top-ranked Alabama.
Manziel made the leap from third to take the No. 1 spot from Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd, who dropped to second with his team idle. Manziel piled up 51 points, including three first-place votes, to pass Boyd among the poll’s 13 Heisman Trophy voters.
Boyd held off Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, who passed for 456 yards and four touchdowns against Tennessee. Mariota received the most first-place votes with four.
Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron reentered the Top 10 at No. 5 after a big day against the Aggies.
