Sun Valley (N.C.) standout Jody Fuller has produced numbers against two of the state’s best teams, but it hasn’t been enough to produce wins.
Fuller, a USC commitment, has seen his team lose in consecutive weeks to open the season. First, there was a 70-28 loss to Class AAAA state powerhouse Richmond County (N.C.), and then there was Friday’s 52-21 loss to Class AAAA’s Mallard Creek (N.C.). Richmond is ranked fourth and Mallard Creek is No. 1 in maxpreps.com’s state rankings.
It’s been a rough start for Fuller and Co., especially coming off last year’s 10-3 campaign.
“It’s been tough so far, but I believe we’re going to get right and play strong the rest of the way,” Fuller said. He believes the quality of the Spartans’ early schedule will help them down the road.
Fuller has produced big numbers so far.
In the opener, he caught six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 76 yards and two scores. In Friday’s loss to nationally ranked Mallard Creek, he caught four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown and rushed twice for 18 yards, scoring on a 19-yard reverse.
Sun Valley hosts Garinger (N.C.) this Friday.
Here are how USC’s other commitments at the skill positions fared:
-- Brendan Nosovitch, QB, Allentown Central Catholic (Pa.) | Nosovitch opens his senior season Saturday against Downington East (Pa.). He passed for 3,111 yards, ran for 1,647 and accounted for 68 total touchdowns last season. ACC was 16-0 and won the Class AAA state title in 2010.
-- Kelvin Rainey, TE, Yulee (Fla.) | Rainey opens his senior season Saturday against Gainesville (Fla.). He had 22 catches for 436 yards and six touchdowns last season. Yulee was 9-3 in 2010.
-- Shaq Roland, WR, Lexington | Roland caught seven passes for 125 yards, including an 11-yard, second-quarter touchdown, in a 63-0 win over Batesburg-Leesville. He also rushed twice for five yards. Lexington (1-0) visits Blythewood this Friday.
