Below is a play that has received a lot of attention. It’s South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney being clipped by North Carolina offensive tackle Kiaro Holts.
As the ESPN broadcast notes, “It’s a dirty play.”
Clowney limped off the field but returned. And good thing, for Holts. Can you imagine the outcry had Clowney been seriously injured? As it is, it looks bad enough. The play didn’t come up in postgame interviews with Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora because, frankly, media members (myself included) probably didn’t know how bad it looked. (I didn't.)
With the game decided, perhaps that play motivated Steve Spurrier to attempt a long pass in the final seconds. After that, Fedora called a meaningless timeout with five seconds to play (and so did Spurrier, after UNC’s timeout). Asked if he would have called that timeout had South Carolina not attempted that long pass, Fedora said, “Probably not.”
