As he has for the previous eight seasons, coach Steve Spurrier sat down with me for a one-on-one look at the freshman class. Who is playing from this year's class, who is being redshirted, practicing with the varsity or working with the scout team?
Here’s the status of each freshman and a quote from Spurrier:
LARENZ BRYANT: Played in every game on special teams and at Spur.
“Larenz is a special teams player who is doing well. He was one of our most highly-rated recruits last year. He's gotten some snaps and should be an excellent linebacker here the next three years.”
Never miss a local story.
PHAROH COOPER: Played in seven of nine games, has rushed 12 times for 94 yards (7.8 avg.), is 1-for-1 passing (3 yds), one reception (12 yards), has returned seven punts for 42 yards (6.0 avg.) and seven kickoffs for 150 yards (21.4 avg.).
“Pharoh is a good athlete, he's our Wildcat guy. He's got an outstanding future here as a receiver, punt returner, kickoff returner and quarterback in the Wildcat. He is really versatile.”
MOHAMED CAMARA: Redshirted
“Mohamed got here late because of some academic issues that took a while to get straightened out. He's been on the scout team since he got here just before the season started. Hopefully will come around at safety for us this spring.”
ELLIOTT FRY: Walk-on kicker is 10-of-12 on field goals (long of 44 yards) and is 35-of-36 on PATs.
“Elliott has proven to be our kicker, and hopefully he will be for the next three years. He's done an outstanding job, and we need to get him on scholarship as soon as we can because he has earned one.”
KELSEY GRIFFIN: Played in eight games, has seven total tackles with four solo.
“Kelsey has played a little bit at defensive tackle. He's learning and getting better, and he should become a starter in a year or so. He's a hard worker.”
ALI GROVES: Redshirted
“Ali had shoulder surgery, and he hasn't done much. Hopefully after next spring he will be a contributor at a cornerback spot. We certainly liked his speed and quickness when we signed him.”
DAVID JOHNSON: Redshirted
“David is being redshirted this year as a defensive lineman. He sort of outgrew linebacker. He's about 280 now, and he will be a tackle or end.”
BRYCE KING: Redshirted
“Bryce is a redshirt offensive lineman who is doing well. He has been working hard, and he should have a chance to play some next year at guard or center. He's doing both.”
ALAN KNOTT: Redshirted
“Alan is another good center or guard. He is getting bigger and stronger and learning the system. He's about 275, but has the frame to easily be a 300-pounder in another year.”
RONNIE MARTIN: Played in one game against UNC.
“Ronnie has had some academic and personal issues, and his status is still up in the air. Hopefully, he'll come around and become a solid cornerback for us.”
CONNOR MITCH: Redshirted
“Connor is a redshirt quarterback, who is doing well. He works hard on the scout team, and does some things with the varsity in our Monday Night Football scrimmages. Next year he will battle with Brendan Nosovitch to see who will back up Dylan (Thompson).”
SKAI MOORE: Tied for leading tackler with 38 (19 solo), with 2.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks and one interception.
“Skai is a real good athlete. He doesn’t look like a freshman. He looks like a third or fourth-year guy. He came from a good high school program where they lifted and trained year round. He's one of our starters now at weakside linebacker.”
D.J. PARK: Redshirted
“D.J. needs to lose a little weight. He's a little heavy (334). He has done fairly well, but we need to trim him down a little bit. He will be a offensive guard.”
NA'TY RODGERS: Played against Arkansas
“Na'Ty has a chance to be a really outstanding offensive lineman. He has a lot of talent and good size. He's close to being ready, and we need to get him in there a little more in these last three games at guard.”
JASPER SASSER: Redshirted
“Jasper is coming along nicely at Spur. He is doing okay and should be ready to compete this spring and be ready next season. He has a real upside.”
JAMARI SMITH: Played in eight games, had four carries for five yards against Mississippi State.
“Right now he's our third running back behind Mike Davis and Shon Carson. He was on defense for a while, but his best position is running back. He's a good kid and a good runner.”
GERALD TURNER: Redshirted
“Gerald sprained an ankle awhile back and hasn't done much. He should be ready to compete this spring and next year at defensive end.”
J.P. VONASHEK: Left the program
JONATHAN WALTON: Played in all nine games, with seven total tackles (4 solo), 0.5 for loss and 0.5 sacks.
“Jonathan is doing well on special teams and playing a little at linebacker. He's a good player, and he is really going to be a good one in the future.”
DEVIN WASHINGTON: Redshirted
“Devin has had a concussion longer than anybody I've ever been around. He hasn't passed the test, and right now we don't know if he will ever be able to play, or not, at defensive end.”
DAVID WILLIAMS: Redshirted
“David has been practicing with the varsity since Brandon Wilds got hurt. We came close to burning his redshirt year because he was ready to play. We think he has a chance to be a very special running back in the future. He works very hard and should challenge our other backs in the spring.”
