Kendall Soundoff: Ward a voice of reason for Clowney

Jadeveon Clowney’s two recent episodes of reckless driving (my words - not the highway patrol’s) needed to be addressed, and South Carolina defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward has done that.
“I told him, ‘You have to slow down. Life is precious,’ ” Ward said. “It’s not just about draft status and getting a ticket, it’s about life. Bad things happen to people who drive fast all the time. Everything I do with JD is all about life lessons.”
Clowney has been ticketed for driving 110 mph in a 70 mph zone and 84 mph in a 55 mph zone in the last three weeks. The most recent ticket came while Clowney was trying to arrive on time for a team meeting.
“Instead of being late for a team meeting, he was late and got a ticket,” Ward said. “He just needs to slow down.”
Ward tried to establish himself as a voice of reason in Clowney’s life since their first meeting, he said.
“He’s been told how great he is all his life, he knows that, but that’s not how he and I developed a relationship,” Ward said. “I told him the very first time I met him that I wasn’t going to tell him how great he was. I think we have a special bond.
“Our relationship is more than just football.”
Starting Thursday, (yeah, I know it started long before Thursday but you get the point) Clowney is going to have a lot of new friends, most of whom will be asking for things. He’s going to need an old friend with a backbone to tell him the truth. Ward would be a good candidate.
