South Carolina's A.J. Cann and Mike Davis were recognized Monday as part of Athlon Sports' preseason All-America teams.
Cann, a senior offensive guard, was the lone Gamecock to garner a spot on Athlon’s first-team unit. Cann, a 6-4, 311-pounder from Bamberg, S.C., owns a team-high 38 starts over the past three seasons and served as a team captain in 2013.
Davis, a 5-9, 223-pound junior running back from Atlanta, was named to Athlon’s third-team All-America squad. Davis last season rushed 203 times for 1,183 yards (the fourth-highest single-season total in school history) with 11 touchdowns.
According to Athlon, the preseason predictions "are based on how players will perform in 2014. Career statistics and awards matter in the evaluation, but choosing players for the 2014 All-America and all-conference teams are largely based on predicting and projecting the best for the upcoming year."
Never miss a local story.
Cann was on the previously announced first team for Athlon’s preseason All-SEC squads, with Davis a second-teamer there.
Sophomore linebacker Skai Moore also was selected to the preseason SEC second team.
Named to the SEC third team were senior offensive tackle Corey Robinson and sophomore placekicker Elliott Fry.
Junior receiver Shaq Roland was an all-SEC fourth-team choice.
