Bruce Ellington is hampered, but I bet he plays. I can’t say that for USC’s tight ends.

So, Drew Owens, it’s your time.

No doubt that the kid looks the part. At 6-foot-6 and 244 pounds, Owens wins the eye contest the first time you see him. But he has yet to play in his third year at South Carolina, because of a redshirt season and then a knee injury.

Busta Anderson is ailing. Ditto Jerell Adams, although he should play. That leaves it up to Owens to go out there and do what he can do. If he can replicate what those two guys can do, so much the better.

We’ve spoken a lot this preseason about the importance of the tight ends in USC’s offense. Without a stretch-the-field receiver (at least a proven one, anyway), the Gamecocks need to know they have the safety valve at TE. With Anderson and Adams, that’s the best duo in the country.

Owens can add himself and make it a trio. The Gamecocks, for this game, are willing to concede him as a singular star. He’ll have the opportunity, surely.

Time for him to channel his inner Melvin Ingram and step forward.
