South Carolina missed for the first time on the recruiting trail.
Shakayla Thomas, the No. 12 overall recruit in the country and a player ranked third at her position, chose Florida State over the Gamecocks and home-state Alabama on Thursday. Her coach, Derrick Crawford, confirmed the choice to The State on Thursday morning.
USC still stands to welcome in a star-studded class. Coach Dawn Staley is set to receive letters over the next few days from three players. Jatarie White (No. 7 overall, No. 1 forward), Bianca Cuevas (No. 44 overall, No. 8 guard) and Doniyah Cliney (No. 105 overall) all recently pledged and just have to make it official. Kaydra Duckett (No. 32 overall, No. 6 guard) sent in her letter on Wednesday and has already been formally announced by USC.
USC will announce the other three when all letters were in. But once they are all in, the Gamecocks can turn their attention toward adding a fifth player. The Gamecocks are heavily recruiting No. 1 national recruit A’ja Wilson, who preps at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, just about six miles from Colonial Life Arena. Wilson will sign in the spring, but hasn’t decided where she will go.
USC has a spot available and has already added White, a close friend of Wilson’s. Wilson is also very close with Duckett.
The Gamecocks could potentially add six total recruits to the class next year. Men’s team to add two
USC’s men’s team will receive letters-of-intent from Keenan High School’s Marcus Stroman and TeMarcus Blanton (Luella HS, Ga.) this week. Stroman signed on Thursday and Blanton will sign on Friday.
