Two straight wins didn’t go unnoticed.
The SEC selected South Carolina’s Sindarius Thornwell as its Freshman of the Week on Monday, the second such selection for Thornwell this season. In wins over Vanderbilt and Alabama last week, Thornwell averaged 20.5 points, five rebounds and five assists, recording his sixth 20-point game of the season, and fifth in SEC play. USC’s all-time leading scorer, BJ McKie, had five 20-plus league games in his SEC Freshman of the Year campaign in 1995-96.
Thornwell either scored or assisted on 15 of USC’s final 17 points against Alabama, including two free throws with five seconds to play that gave the Gamecocks a four-point advantage. He is leading all SEC freshmen in scoring (17.2) and assists (4.1) in conference games.
