South Carolina’s 2014-15 basketball schedule will have a decidedly old-school feel. Frank Martin and Company may play in the SEC, but their former conference has a healthy stake of the slate.
The Gamecocks will take on Iowa State in Brooklyn on Jan. 3 this season, the third Big 12 opponent on the schedule. CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein Tweeted on Friday that the Gamecocks and Cyclones have agreed to a game at Barclays Center, with a source close to USC’s program confirming it soon after.
The full schedule most likely won’t be finalized until August, as that’s typically when the SEC releases its portion of the slate. But Martin’s third season will feature another big name in another big game.
USC will take on a team coming off one of the best seasons in school history just before the traditional start of league play. Iowa State went 28-8 last season, winning the Big 12 tournament and advancing to the Sweet 16.
Big 12 member Oklahoma State comes to Columbia on Dec. 6 for the Big 12/SEC Challenge, and USC will also host Baylor in a return game from last year’s game in Waco.
Martin has said that he will gladly play big-name opponents on any stage, as a way of getting his program on TV and thus spreading the word of Gamecock basketball. The game seems a natural to be televised.
The Gamecocks have visited Barclays before. They beat Manhattan 63-57 there two years ago, during Martin’s first season.
Other known games are a home contest against Clemson and a game at Marshall. USC will also participate in the Charleston Classic from Nov. 20-23.
