All things Gamecocks, especially basketball and football

Dawn Staley and A’ja Wilson left Friday for Colorado Springs and the FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Staley is coaching the team and Wilson is playing.

Staley, of course, is a longtime associate of USA basketball, having devoted over half her life to it. She’ll finish with the U18 team before heading for another stint with Team USA during her busy summer.

Wilson is no stranger to USA basketball, either, helping win a gold medal last summer for the U19 team. The difference this time is she’ll get to train in Colorado and stay there, since the tournament is stateside.

The U18 team is seeking a seventh straight gold medal. It will practice under Staley until Aug. 5 and begin playing on Aug. 6.

Wilson will be joined by fellow Team USA gold medalists Recee Caldwell and Brianna Turner, but the rest of the team is playing their first tournament with USA basketball.

Team USA will play Mexico at 8 p.m. on Aug. 6, then take on El Salvador at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 7. Canada finishes the preliminary round at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 8. If the U.S. advances, it will meet Argentina, Brazil, Chile or Puerto Rico in the semifinals.

The gold-medal game is Aug. 10.
