South Carolina front-loaded the schedule, hoping for a more challenging beginning than last year.
So far, the record is about the same.
The Gamecocks played three games in their first 12 days of the season last year, going 1-2. By the time they next take the court on Wednesday, they’ll be playing their sixth game in the first 12 days. Thus far, the record is 2-3.
The delay between games last year cost the Gamecocks later in the year, Frank Martin felt, so he scheduled many games early this year. USC came out looking ragged on Sunday, even after a day off Saturday.
“I was concerned about our ‘ooompf,’ whatever that word is, because of our tough loss to Charlotte. And it was such a physical game, I was worried that we wouldn’t have that kind of resolve that we needed to have,” Martin said.
The Gamecocks found it, making it another close game, but fell when one too many shots missed the mark. They prepared to get back home, get whatever rest they could and come back for UNC Asheville on Wednesday.
Playing at home after a tough three games on the road, perhaps the ‘ooompf’ can be found in Columbia.
