No. 2 South Carolina women’s soccer suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 15 Florida 1-0 in the SEC semifinals on Friday.
The loss snapped a program-record 18-match winning streak for the Gamecocks, who will head into NCAA Tournament play at 18-1-1. USC’s opponent will be announced on Monday during the selection show. The first round of the tournament is Nov. 11-13.
The Gators opened the scoring in the 19th minute after Mayra Pelayo curled in a shot from the right side that dinged off the crossbar. Savannah Jordan took advantage of the rebound, heading the ball into the net past a leaping Gamecock defender, Paige Bendell, for the deciding goal.
South Carolina had defeated Florida in the regular season. That win was part of the team’s record win streak after opening the season with a draw. Entering the SEC Tournment, USC was the only unbeaten team in the nation and had risen to a program-best ranking.
