Quick hits from basketball Darrin Horn’s meeting with reporters on Friday where he announced forward Murphy Holloway asked to be released from the team and discussed other player news from the week:
-Horn said he understands that fans might have concerns but the player departures were isolated incidents and is part of the team’s growing process. He said he has USC Athletics Director Eric Hyman’s support. There has been no statement released by Hyman on Friday.
-USC will work to recruit a point guard for the upcoming season with freshman starter Bruce Ellington’s plans to play football and basketball. The Gamecocks have one other point guard on the roster, Eric Smith, but Horn needs insurance in case either gets injured.
-No other players or coaches are leaving, though Horn couched that with “today.” Next season USC should have 10 scholarship players (nine returnees and a new point guard) and a walk-on (Ellington). That would give USC four openings to add recruits after the 2011-12 season.
Never miss a local story.
-Horn said the team had plans in case Ellington chose to play football, but they had planned for him to return fulltime next season. Ellington told Horn he was going to play football on Monday.
-Guard Ramon Galloway decided to transfer after being told he would not play as many minutes. Horn used the sophomore because he had no other choice this season, but Galloway’s play regressed late in the season.
