John Chavis, who left LSU to become the new defensive coordinator at Texas A&M, had earlier sought a job on the South Carolina coaching staff as defensive coordinator, sources told the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Chavis, who is from Dillon, was offered a three-year extension worth $1.33 million annually to stay at LSU.
He wound up receiving a three-year deal worth $1.67 million annually from the Aggies.
A source told the New Orleans paper that Chavis was upset with LSU's inconsistent offense, but that he had no hard feelings toward Tigers head coach Les Miles.
Never miss a local story.
Miles hired Chavis in 2009 after Tennessee fired him and the rest of Phillip Fulmer's staff.
