OMAHA, Neb. | South Carolina freshman pitcher Forrest Koumas hopes his next start will be on the biggest stage of them all.
The Gamecocks haven't decided if they'll go with Koumas or sophomore right-hander Colby Holmes in Game 2 of the College World Series on Tuesday. The team wants to get through Sunday's game and see how the pitchers match up with the next opponent.
Koumas hasn't pitched since the June 5 Columbia Regional game vs. Stetson that was postponed after four innings because of bad weather.
He is 6-1 on the season with a 3.07 ERA
Never miss a local story.
How has your first time in Omaha been so far?
It's a great experience. All my friends back home are jealous. They're all saying they can't believe I made it here. Hopefully we'll take care of business and do something special.
You haven't pitched in two weeks. What's that been like?
I'm definitely ready to get back out there. My last couple of pens have been really good. I'm just waiting to get back out there and throw against some live hitters.
What have you been doing since you last pitched - the normal routine?
Just working out, conditioning and throwing pens.
What was your impression of the CWS Opening Ceremonies at the new park?
It was pretty crazy, with all the fans there. It was packed. Seeing all the teams there together, that was a pretty good experience.
What has been the team's reactions to Michael Roth billboards around town?
It was kind of a shock when we saw the picture. Every time we ride by everybody starts yelling about Michael being on it. It's a good thing with him getting that publicity.
Has it always been a dream of yours to get to Omaha and the College World Series?
Oh yeah. Me and my dad were talking about watching it ever since I was 6 years old thinking about trying to go there but never really thinking we would. Now we're here.
How special is it to get here as a true freshman?
It's what I wanted to do when we got here. It's everybody's goal to get Omaha. Hopefully we'll bring another back to Columbia.
Are you expecting some butterflies if you do get to pitch this week?
Yes. Hopefully they'll be there and then go away.
