Freshman Max Schrock is on track to be the Gamecocks' starting second baseman when the baseball team begins its 2013 season on Feb. 15.
The 5-foot-9, 175-pound infielder from Cardinal Gibbons in Chapel Hill, N.C., committed to South Carolina in December of his sophomore year of high school.
A 2012 MLB Draft selection (28th round/Arizona Diamondbacks), Schrock was rated the No. 151 best high school prospect in the nation and No. 3 best high school prospect in state of North Carolina by Perfect Game USA.
Never miss a local story.
What's it like to be pretty much named the starting second baseman?
It's a big responsibility. I'm happy to be in a position where I could possibly start. I'm thrilled with the trust that they have in me.
Does early playing time validate a decision to pass on the pros?
I'm really happy with my decision to come here. It's a dream come true. I'm thrilled.
Have some of the veterans helped you learn the ropes here?
Chase Vergason is one in particular that really helped me. He was still at second base when I got here. He showed me the ropes and what to do over there. It was really helpful.
What are your impressions so far of coach Chad Holbrook?
Coach tanner recruited me so I got to know him sort of well. But coach Holbrook was the one I always talked to throughout the process. I love him. He's a great coach. There are nothing but good things to say about him.
Did the team's College World Series success play a role into your decision to commit to USC?
I was actually committed here before they won any national championships. It was really nice once they did because it reassured my decision to come here.
Talk about being committed to a school for so long.
It was actually a little tough because after I committed, it seem liked after forever until I actually got here. I think that helped my decision between choosing between here and going pro. I had been committed here for so long. I had been to so many games. It helped a lot.
Is there any extra motivation to being a part of Holbrook's first team as the head coach?
I'm thrilled to be part of Coach Holbrook's first team. I am hoping we can do good things. I'm really looking forward to it.
