South Carolina junior Joey Pankake will not pitch the rest of fall baseball practice due to a strain in his right elbow.
USC coach Chad Holbrook had hoped to see if Pankake could contribute on the mound heading into next season, but that experiment will be put on hold due to the injury. Pankake, who’s moving from shortstop to third base in the everyday lineup, also did not bat in the weekend scrimmages because of the elbow issue. He will return to hitting in upcoming scrimmages.
Sophomore second baseman Max Schrock also is taking it slow in fall practices after suffering a back injury during the summer. He still has not played in the first two weekends of scrimmages.
Marcus Mooney, a junior-college transfer who’s expected to battle for the starting job at shortstop, missed this past weekend’s scrimmages due to a hematoma. He’s expected to return to the field this coming weekend.
Never miss a local story.
