Back injury could keep Elliott Caldwell out for season

South Carolina outfielder Elliott Caldwell's back injury will sideline him for six to eight weeks.

South Carolina outfielder Elliott Caldwell's back injury will sideline him for six to eight weeks.

"He has a pretty significant injury there," coach Chad Holbrook told Phil Kornblut on Tuesday on the SportsTalk Radio Network. "We'll probably lose Elliott for the rest of the year."

Caldwell, a junior who transferred to USC from Spartanburg Methodist College, has started 35 of the Gamecocks' 45 games. He was batting .254 with 14 RBIs.

Caldwell played Saturday against Alabama despite a stress fracture in his back. He missed Sunday's game and then had an MRI.

Reliever Vince Fiori (strained lat muscle) is doing better and could travel with the team to Georgia this weekend, Holbrook said.

Connor Bright (arm) and Max Schrock (various ailments) are still "iffy" to play against the Bulldogs.
