A few quick pregame notes before the Gamecocks take on the College of Charleston at Patriots Point Field:
Closer Matt Price, who pitched 4 1/3 innings over the weekend, did not make the trip to Charleston. Price, who has four wins and 11 saves on the season, would not have been used tonight anyway so the coaches left him back in Columbia.
Suspended outfielder Jake Williams did not make the trip either. But injured outfielder Adam Matthews, who hurt his hamstring against Vanderbilt Saturday, did accompany the team, although he was on crutches. Matthews isn’t expected back in the lineup any time soon.
Sophomore left-hander Tyler Webb (2-1, 1.77 ERA) is starting for the Gamecocks. He has not started a game since March 13 against Cal State Bakersfield. He started four games before his struggles, and then a sore arm, relegated him to the bullpen. He made a pair of short relief appearances against Vanderbilt over the weekend.
Never miss a local story.
The starting pitcher for the College of Charleston is sophomore left-hander Jake Zokan, a former Spring Valley High standout. Zokan, who pitched in relief in the 24-4 loss to USC last month, also started a game against the Gamecocks last season in Columbia. He enters this contest with a 0-0 record and 8.44 ERA.
College of Charleston coach Monte Lee, who served as an assistant to USC coach Ray Tanner for six seasons before going to Charleston, picked up his 100th career win Sunday against The Citadel. He’s 100-52 in his third season leading the Cougars.
