In 2005, Steve Spurrier's first year at USC, the Gamecocks beat the Volunteers for the third time ever and the first time ever in Knoxville.
Coach Steve Spurrier, in his first year at USC, leads the Gamecocks to their first ever win in Knoxville (0-11 previously). It also was the first victory over Tennessee anywhere since 1992.
It didn’t come easy however, as the Vols led 12-7 at halftime, behind an Arian Foster TD and a sack for a safety. Game MVP Sidney Rice put Carolina ahead 13-12 with his second TD catch with 11:33 left. Rice had eight receptions for 112 yards.
UT regained the lead 15-13 on a 43-yard FG midway through the fourth.
USC wouldn’t fold though, and in a huge spot, USC kicker Josh Brown calmly nailed a 49-yard FG with 2:45 left giving Carolina the 16-15 win.
