South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has an uncanny memory. He can call up details from games decades ago at virtually any time, but there is one bit of the past the Gamecocks head coach probably would just as soon forget. In the seven years he took his Florida teams to the SEC title game, Spurrier lost five times to rival Florida State in the preceding week.
Spurrier was 1-5-1 in those games during his time in Gainesville. That statistic is pertinent this week because No. 18 South Carolina plays Clemson on Saturday, one week before taking on Auburn in the SEC title game. The Gamecocks won’t look ahead to the championship game this week, Spurrier insisted Wednesday on the SEC coaches weekly teleconference.
“We are going up there to play everybody we’ve got to try to win the game,” Spurrier said. “We’ll worry about next week’s game when it gets here. The fans here in South Carolina, that’s their biggest game of the year.”
Spurrier also said Wednesday that he expects cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore (concussion) and Marty Markett (concussion) to play this week.
