Game prediction below video
ATLANTA – I am writing this prediction post under duress.
I mentioned earlier this season how difficult it is to pick rivalry games. Well, that goes double for bowl games. South Carolina is a three-point favorite against Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, but I can’t imagine the oddsmakers feel very good about that line - or any bowl game line for that matter.
Unless you’re talking about the national title game, when you know both teams really, really care who wins, it’s hard to figure bowl games. Who knows when one team just might not show up for whatever reason?
I expect both teams to be mentally engaged Friday night in the Georgia Dome. South Carolina is playing for just the second 10-win season in school history, and the Seminoles are playing hard under first-year head coach Jimbo Fisher.
However, even without that variable to worry about, there’s still the question of who is better. Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier has mentioned time and again this month how evenly matched these two teams are, and it’s hard to argue the point.
After a well-documented slow start to my picks, I’m on a seven-game winning streak. As you can tell, I have very little confidence in extending that streak. My thought is the Seminoles win this game because of the strength of their defensive front four and ability to hit big plays against an inconsistent South Carolina secondary.
My pick: Florida State 29, South Carolina 27
