It’s time to talk some football, so we have compiled a list of the top 20 players South Carolina will face in 2011. We will unveil one each day. There is at least one player from each opponent.
No. 5. Tyler Wilson
Never miss a local story.
Hometown: Greenwood, Ark.
Size: 6-foot-3, 215 pounds
Last year: 34-for-51, 453 yards, four touchdowns
Career: 67-for-109, 740 yards, seven touchdowns
Scouting Report: Wilson has a very daunting task in front of him. Not only is he faced with replacing Ryan Mallett, likely the best quarterback in school history, but he must do so heading into one of the most anticipated seasons in school history.
The thought might be overwhelming for some first-time starters, but Wilson has fared well in big moments before. Last year, replacing an injured Mallett, he was 25-for-34 for 332 yards and four touchdowns against Auburn. During a celebrated prep career in Arkansas, he led his team to a 56-55 state title game victory with a touchdown pass and two-point conversion pass in the final minute.
Razorbacks head coach Bobby Petrino has yet to officially name Wilson the starter, but it’ll be a shock if he doesn’t step under center against the Gamecocks, who have seen enough of Arkansas’ passing attack to be worried.
Quotable: “We believe this year can be a special year, and we can do things that we haven’t done here before. I feel like we’re a much better football team. We’re starting to look like you should look.” – Wilson to SI.com
Stats against USC: Wilson has not attempted a pass against the Gamecocks. He entered last year’s game but had only a sack to show for it
