On-field coaches are not allowed to watch their team’s summer workouts, but South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier has heard good things, he said Thursday.
“The (strength) coaches say things are going well,” he said.
Spurrier mentioned Lattimore, Jeffery and newcomer Bruce Ellington as players who are “leading the pack.”
Quarterback Stephen Garcia, who is on a probationary status after being reinstated from his fifth suspension, is still in the team’s good graces, Spurrier said.
Never miss a local story.
“So far Stephen has done everything that we have asked, but Connor Shaw is there now, too,” Spurrier said. “We are going to have some competition for the quarterback job, and it’s not because Stephen got in trouble. We are going to find out who can play the best. Stephen and Connor in all likelihood are going to be our quarterbacks, in all likelihood.”
ONE LAST ROUND
Spurrier is in Lake Tahoe, Calif., this week for the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament he has played in 21 of the last 22 years.
“I am basically finished with golf after this,” Spurrier said. “We will start really getting mentally into football Monday.”
