Incoming freshman offensive lineman Brandon Shell won’t be cleared for contact for two weeks, offensive line coach Shawn Elliott said.
Shell, a Goose Creek native who was rated a five-star prospect by one recruiting service, had been expected to step in and play right away. And he still might, Elliott said.
“That’s going to put him behind a little bit, but he’s going to have every opportunity to go out there and play,” Elliott said. “If he can pick it up and he can fight with the rest of them, then you’ll probably see him out there on the field.”
Shell had shoulder surgery this summer to repair a damaged labrum.
Never miss a local story.
“It certainly does (hurt),” Elliott said. “Just the physical nature of playing against guys who are bigger, stronger. Those guys that line up that look almost exactly like he does. To miss two weeks of the physical nature of the sport is going to be tough on him.”
The 6-foot-6, 316-pound Shell told The State earlier this month that he expects to play this season despite the practice time he will miss.
