Senior Stephen Garcia and sophomore Connor Shaw both will play against East Carolina on Sept. 3, head coach Steve Spurrier said on his Thursday night radio call-in show.
“We are going to look at all the stats, drives and touchdowns and this, that and the other, and the guy who has played the best in the preseason practices is going to start the game because that’s what we said we were going to do,” Spurrier said.
Shaw’s scrimmage numbers have been better than Garcia’s this fall, and Spurrier said Thursday that, “statistically he’s the best quarterback on the team right now.”
“Of course, Stephen has played a little bit more, has more experience and this, that and the other,” Spurrier said.
The Gamecocks will name a starter by early next week, Spurrier said. Garcia said the talk of the competition has not distracted him in practice.
“It is what it is,” Garcia said. “We’ve been doing this for two years now. We know how to deal with it.”
Senior cornerback Akeem Auguste, who practiced for the first time Wednesday but only briefly after returning from an arch injury, didn’t get much, if any, work Thursday, wide receiver Jason Barnes said.
“I was looking for him, but I didn’t see him out there,” Barnes said. “He said he still is struggling getting in and out of cuts. He’s still rehabbing, but he’s going to be fine.”
All-SEC defensive end Devin Taylor may see some snaps on offense this year, Garcia said. Garcia would not reveal how the 6-foot-7 junior might be used on offense.
“He’s a tremendous athlete,” Garcia said. “We’re trying to get him on the field on offense, too, so we’ll see if we can do that. I don’t really know if we’re going to use it or not, but he’s a freak.”
TIGHT END ROTATION
True freshman Rory Anderson has emerged as the second-team tight end behind Justice Cunningham, he said Thursday. Spurrier confirmed that on his call-in show.
"When we use two tight ends, he's been the one going in there," Spurrier said.
Anderson, 6-foot-5, 201 pounds, was a three-star prospect coming out of Powder Springs, Ga.
